Powersmiths & High Performance Sustainable Buildings

Powersmiths products contribute to high performance sustainable buildings by:

Reducing energy waste          -top-

Powersmiths E-Saver-C3™ and T1000-C3™ energy efficient transformers have substantially lower losses (higher efficiency) than other transformers. These energy savings mean less kilowatt-hours (kWh) consumed and lower energy bills. Electricity demand charges also decline, thanks to reduced energy losses. These savings pay for the transformer many times over its installed life.

Powersmiths Cyberhawk energy management systems - provide state-of-the-art energy consumption monitoring, with web-accessible reporting to help you identify and reduce energy waste in your building.

Powersmiths Smart 2 Integrated meter is an option on every Powersmiths transformer. It provides energy and power data at a valuable distribution sub-metering point. It is designed for easy connection to existing building energy management systems, or can be monitored over the web on a stand-alone basis. Smart2 can also provide data for Powersmiths 3D Learning system.

Optimizing for lowest life cycle cost and a long life          -top-

Transformers are installed for decades, out of sight and out of mind in locked electrical rooms. Unfortunately, despite the fact that their lifetime operating cost is roughly 20 times the first cost, the vast majority of transformers are purchased on a first cost basis. This is typically due to a lack of education on transformer performance, and a buying process that typically involves the purchase decision being made by a party that does not pay the electricity bill. By balancing first cost and operating cost, Powersmiths has optimized the design of its E-Saver-C3 transformer to minimize its life cycle cost. Construction includes a high performance insulation system which ensures long life.

Protecting the Electrical Infrastructure          -top-

A high performance building contains a wide variety of electrical and electronic equipment. From powering sophisticated ventilation and lighting control systems that optimize air quality and energy use, to the computers used by building occupants, the electrical system performs a critical function. Without it, a building and the people in it literally cease to function.

Electrical power is normally provided by the local electrical utility. Electrical disturbances such as voltage sags, swells, over-voltages and transients can temporarily stop or damage equipment. They are increasingly common and can be caused by a wide variety of external events including lightning, fallen trees, car accidents. Powersmiths STEP (Sustained Total Electrical Protection) can be installed at the building entrance or other key distribution points to protect your electrical equipment. Protection can be combined with metering and control features (see Powersmiths Cyberhawk MPC) to ensure that building is protected and electrical system conditions are documented.

Improving the quality of power to connected electrical equipment          -top-

While Powersmiths STEP provides protection against electrical disturbances, distortion of the voltage waveform (harmonic content) also reduces the power quality, and national standards like IEEE-519 detail the associated reduction in the operating reliability of connected equipment. High performance transformers like the Powersmiths T1000-C3 improves the quality of the voltage waveform, reducing distortion, providing a more stable electrical environment for all connected equipment, especially the electronic equipment.

Monitoring, analyzing, and controlling electrical consumption          -top-

The Powersmiths Cyberhawk moniters - provide state-of-the-art monitoring of consumption and live web-accessible reports to facilitate energy management and cost reduction initiatives.

The Powersmiths Smart 2 Integrated meter is an option on every Powersmiths transformer. It provides energy and power data at a valuable distribution sub-metering point. It is designed for easy connection to existing building energy management systems, or can be monitored over the web on a stand-alone basis. It can feed data to the Powersmiths 3D Learning system.

Providing education for sustainability          -top-

Educating for sustainability is a key mandate for achieving high-performance building status. To address this need, Powersmiths developed 3-D Learning programs that serve as a visual learning outreach program. Powersmiths 3-D Learning systems provide on-screen and web accessible displays that encourage people to think about the energy saving initiatives used in your building. By involving building occupants and external stakeholders in your energy conservation efforts you increase awareness of the cause and effect of user choices on electricity consumption and the associated environmental impacts.

Minimizing environmental impact during manufacturing, packaging, shipment of its products  -top-

Manufacturing, packaging and shipment can have significant negative environmental impacts. Powersmiths  is the only transformer manufacturer in North America to have achieved the prestigious ISO 14001 certification for its environmental management system.  Some of our environmental initiatives include the reduction of VOCs (volatile organic compounds) in transformer insulation, the implementation of a Powersmiths designed Easy-Skid a shipping method that reduces use of wood, increases shipping density, and uses biodegradable wrap.
